This section provides a glossary of terms which relate to i-mode®. The content is listed in alphabetical order


Access key
This key allows users to access a URL or location within a homepage by linking the URL or location with a number (key button).


Bookmarks
This function allows users to register their favourite homepage address. This enables users to gain access to these pages in one click rather than navigating through the genre's and menus.


Browsing
The process of navigating around the i-mode portal and viewing content. i-mode browsing is charged at £3 per mega byte (MB). A MB is the total weight/size of pages that can be viewed for £3. On average 70 to 100 i-mode pages can be viewed for 1 MB, however this depends on the graphics on each page.


Categories / genres
Categories and genres are groupings of content sites within i-mode. Examples of categories and genre's include news, sport, shopping and banking.


Data usage
This is the amount of data used in browsing and downloading content. This is measured in MB's is equivalent to 1,024,000 bytes. A Kb is equivalent to 1,024 bytes. One letter is equivalent to 1 bit and 1 pictograph is equivalent to 2 bytes.


Download
The process of moving an item stored on the portal (Internet) to your handset. Downloads include text, pictures, music, sound and video clips. Downloads are charged at £3 per mega byte (MB)


Flash
Similar to flash sites on the Internet, some i-mode sites and handsets enable flash technology. Developed by Macromedia flash enables the creation of visually expressive sites with rich animation and sound. Users can store Flash data onto their handset and set it as wallpapers.


i-guide
The printed version of the i-guide is a directory of all the content sites within i-mode. It contains screen shots, site descriptions and services offered within each site. There is also an i-guide within the i-mode portal. This is an update guide showing all the latest sites, services and news from the content providers.


i-mail
i-mail is the email and messaging service within i-mode. i-mail allows users to send and receive messages in email format to other i-mode handsets and the Internet. i-mails are converted to an MMS when sent to non i-mode handsets. Users can send text and attachments using i-mail. You pay for each i-mail sent irrespective of the size of the message. However i-mails will be free until summer 2006.


i-menu
The i-menu is the gateway to the i-mode portal. From pressing the i-mode button users are presented with the i-menu from which you can access the i-mode categories and content sites.


i-mode
i-mode from O2 is your window to a world of information, with the widest choice and depth of content available on your mobile.


i-mail domain
All i-mail email addresses end with @o2imail.co.uk. The default for the i-mail address will be the users mobile number. This can be changed by the user to any unique alpha or numeric address ending in the domain of @o2imail.co.uk


Independent content providers
Independent content providers deliver i-mode sites that sit outside the i-mode portal menu. By typing in the URL of the site users can visit the depth of breadth of content available through i-mode.


Internet
In this section you can enter a web address or URL to search for content sites outside the O2 i-mode portal.


Java / DoJa
Java / Doja is a type of software program users can download from the internet, which can be saved onto the handset. Java software can download data automatically and can also be used without connecting to the network.


Last URL
This shows the last site/page that you visited. Through the last URL function users are able to revisit this page in a later browsing session.


MMS
- Picture Messaging for i-mode will work as it does on other devices and is compatible with non i-mode devices and other networks. For i-mode users this will be free until summer '06.


Mobile banking
Mobile banking allows users to view their bank account on their handset. It gives users the ability to transfer money, view balances, list transaction details, access various finance information, linkage with telephone banking.


My Menu
This is a menu option which allows you to easily see your current subscriptions on i-mode. You can then view or unsubscribe subscribed services directly, staying in full control.


Official Content Providers
Official content providers provide i-mode sites that sit within the i-mode portal and are grouped within genre's allowing the user easy navigation.


Parental control
As a default i-mode users are able to access any internet site, but not adult content through the i-mode menus unless they verify their age with O2. Parents can also place parental control on a child's device the block access to the internet - just call 61818 or O2 Customer Service on your usual number.


Pictographs ("Emojis")
Graphical icons that are stored in the phone. These are used within messages and within the i-mode portal to provide a graphical representation of the services.


Saved pages
Saved pages contains up to one page from up to 5 i-mode content partners. These pages look like a screen-grab but contain working links that allow users fast access to frequently used pages within i-mode. This area for first times users will contain text information advising what this section is for and how to save screenshots.


Settings
This is a menu option allowing you to set options such as i-mail blocked lists.


Subscriptions
You can subscribe to i-mode services offered by the Content Providers found on the i-mode menus. Any live subscriptions can be viewed on My Menu


SSL
Secure Sockets Layer. A method of transmission using encryption to protect confidential data, such as credit card numbers, home addresses and other personal data against fraud. SSL provides a secure data transmission environment to send confidential information using i-mode.


Usage / traffic counter
This screen shows you how much browsing and downloading you have done recently to help you manage your costs and stay in control.
